Behaviour Curriculum
'Children's behaviour at St.Finian's is outstanding and a clear indication that Gospel morals and values are
implicit everywhere.' Catholic Schools Inspection (CSI), Feb 23.
‘Strong behaviour management is the foundation upon which outstanding learning can be built.’
Tom Bennett
We are proud of our St. Finian’s school community and believe that respectful and positive relationships are borne out of a strong sense of belonging. We achieve this by teaching and modelling expected behaviour, setting high expectations for all. Senior Leaders, our school Behaviour Lead (BL) and all staff, work continuously to support children in making positive behaviour choices; all are expected to play an active part in creating a safe, happy and purposeful community where everyone can flourish.
Through a consistent behaviour managment approach, children learn that they are part of a culture that recognises and celebrates respectful attitudes and that their positive choices play a fundamental part in creating a thriving and vibrant learning environment, where all can flourish.
In formulating our approach to behaviour and our school behaviour policy, we draw upon evidenced based research, including key guidance documents for schools including:
- EEF Guidance Document: Improving Behaviour in Schools
- DfE Behaviour in Schools, Feb 2024.
- Ofsted Toolkit, Sept 25.
- When the adult changes, everthing changes; Paul Dix
In summary, our key principles for managing behaviour at St.Finian's include:
- Knowing our pupils
- Explicitly teaching expected behaviour
- Supporting teachers with classroom behaviour strategies
- Using tailored approaches for individual pupils
- Building parent relationships
Inclusive Practice
Some children need additional support to remain regulated and to be supported in making positive choices. This is provided in many different ways; for example, some children receive daily lunchtime and breaktime support from our pastoral mentor or participate in small group work activities through our ELSA programme.
Attitudes and Behaviours
To achieve high standards of behaviour, children are taught the importance of 3 fundamental principles that shape our decisions and interactions throughout the school day:
- We are Respectful
- We are Responsible
- We are Ready
We also teach 8 Behaviours for Learning; these weave through the whole curriculum, equipping children with the important skills and attitudes they need to be successful learners now and in the future.
- Be Curious
- Be Reflective
- Be Organised
- Be Collaborative
- Be Determined
- Be Critical
- Be Creative
- Be Proud
Children have the opportunity to champion our Behaviour Curriculum by taking on leadership roles; each one, creating a powerful opportunity to model expected behaviour to peers on a daily basis (see 'Pupil Leadership' page under 'Our School' tab on our homepage. )
Examples include:
- Reading Ambassadors
- Prayer Leaders
- Y6 Play Leaders-playtimes & lunch times
- Bistro Buddies-lunch hall support
- Stewards of Creation Eco Group
- Social Action Mini Vinnies Group
- Sports Ambassadors
- Altar Servers
